Mesa Gas: Understanding Excess Flow Valves (EFVs)

At Mesa Gas, safety is paramount. Their goal is to maintain and operate a safe and reliable gas system for their customers. As an additional safety measure to their system, they install Excess Flow Valves (EFVs) on gas service lines to limit the flow of gas in the event the line is broken or severely damaged. This is often associated with excavation or vehicle impact with the meter assembly. Because an EFV restricts the gas flow, it reduces the potential for explosions, fires, and personal injury.

How do they work?

If the service line pressure drops suddenly due to gas escaping from the damaged pipe, there is enough pressure differential to close the valve, allowing only a slight bleed-by. The gas may not be escaping under full pressure, but there will typically be enough gas to provide a gas odor indicating a problem. To report the damaged service line or if you smell gas, call 911 and Mesa's emergency hotline at 480-644-4277.

If you have an existing EFV, it is typically installed either at the service line connection to the gas main or at the customer's property line. Mesa Gas ensures that EFVs are easily identifiable by a washer on the meter riser. If you notice this indicator on your gas meter assembly, it means that you have an EFV installed. However, if you need help determining whether your property is equipped with an EFV or if you want to install one, they are here to help. Their team can provide detailed information about EFVs, including their functionality, benefits, and the installation process. Click here to learn more about EFVs and how they can benefit you.
